The Siege of Deeg was an important battle that happened between December 11 and 24, 1804. It took place at the main fort in a place called Deeg, which is now in Rajasthan, India. At that time, Deeg was part of the Bharatpur Kingdom.

During this siege, soldiers from the British East India Company fought against the Maratha defenders of the fort. The British forces were led by General Lake. The goal of the British was to capture the strong Deeg fort.

What Was the Siege of Deeg?

A siege is when an army surrounds a place, like a fort or a city. They try to cut off supplies and prevent anyone from leaving or entering. The goal is to force the people inside to give up. The Siege of Deeg was part of a bigger conflict called the Second Anglo-Maratha War. This war was fought between the British East India Company and the Maratha Empire in India.

Who Fought in the Siege?

On one side were the British East India Company troops. This company was a powerful British trading group that also had its own army. On the other side were the Marathas, who were a group of Indian rulers and warriors. They controlled a large empire in India.

Key Events of the Siege

The siege of Deeg fort began on November 20, 1804. The British army surrounded the fort. They started to heavily attack the fort with cannons on December 13. This type of attack is called a bombardment.

The British focused their attack on a specific part of the fort. This area was a strong point on the southwest side called Shahburz. By December 23, they had made a large hole, or "breach," in the fort's walls. This breach allowed soldiers to enter.

That night, the British launched a big attack from three different directions. The Maratha defenders realized they could not hold the fort. They decided to leave Deeg and went to a nearby city called Bharatpur on December 24. This meant the British had won the siege.

What Were the Results?

The British troops successfully captured Deeg Fort. They had 227 soldiers who were either killed or injured during the siege. The number of Maratha soldiers who were hurt or killed is not known. This victory was important for the British in the Second Anglo-Maratha War.
