What is the Sigmoid Threadplant?
The sigmoid threadplant is a small plant that lives for just one year. It is known for its unique, wavy stem and tiny flowers. It's a member of the bellflower family, which includes many beautiful flowering plants.
Where Does It Grow?
This special plant grows naturally in the mountains and deserts. You can find it where the states of California, Nevada, and Arizona meet. It also grows in Baja California, which is a part of Mexico. It likes dry, rocky places.
What Does It Look Like?
The sigmoid threadplant is a very small plant. Its stem is thin and can be purplish or brown. It spreads out and usually grows no longer than 12 centimeters (about 5 inches).
At the bottom of the plant, you'll find small, oval-shaped leaves. These leaves are usually hairy and sometimes have tiny teeth along their edges. They are only about one centimeter long.
Its Unique Flowers
The flowers of the sigmoid threadplant grow on zigzagging branches. Each flower sits on a thin stalk called a pedicel. These pedicels are special because they are sigmoid in shape. This means they are curved like an "S" or have a wavy look.
At the base of each pedicel, there's a single tiny leaf-like part called a bract. The flowers themselves are very small, less than 4 millimeters long. They are a bit hairy and have five white parts, called lobes, that have yellow tips.
