Sigurd Eystein Køhn (born August 6, 1959 – died December 26, 2004) was a talented Norwegian jazz musician. He was known for playing the saxophone and writing music.

Sigurd Køhn's Musical Journey

Sigurd Køhn was born in Kristiansand, Norway. He started playing music at a young age. When he was 9, he learned to play the violin and the clarinet. By the time he was 14, he began playing the alto saxophone, which became his main instrument.

When Sigurd was 19, he moved to Oslo. There, he quickly became an important part of the city's jazz music scene. In the 1980s, he played the saxophone with several bands that mixed jazz with other styles like fusion and soul music. Some of these bands included "Lava" and "The Heavy Gentlemen."

In the 1990s, Sigurd returned to playing more traditional jazz. From 1992 until his death, he played with a jazz quartet called The Real Thing. He also led his own group, the "Sigurd Køhn Quartet," starting in 1994. Later, he formed the "Køhn/Johansen Sextet" in 1999.

In 1996, Sigurd Køhn released his first album as a solo artist. It was called More Pepper, Please. On this album, he played music by another famous saxophonist named Art Pepper. Many people liked the album a lot.

Sigurd also performed with the famous Norwegian band a-ha. He toured with them between 1991 and 1994. He even recorded a jazz version of their song "October."

His last album, This Place, was finished just before a very sad event happened. It was planned to be released in January 2005. However, due to the tragic events, the album's release was delayed. Instead, the planned release concert became a special tribute concert. Many of Sigurd's friends played his music to honor him. His wife, Heidi Køhn, later released the album on October 26, 2005.

A Tragic Loss

Sigurd Køhn and his 16-year-old son, Simen, were on vacation in Khao Lak, Thailand. On December 26, 2004, they sadly drowned. This happened when a huge wave, caused by the Indian Ocean tsunami, hit the area.
