Sikyátki was an ancient Hopi village and an important archaeological site. It is located on the eastern side of First Mesa in Arizona, USA. The village was home to the Kokop clan of the Hopi people for about 300 years. They lived there from the 1300s to the 1600s. The site covers a large area, roughly the size of 6 to 10 football fields.

Exploring Sikyátki: A Look into the Past

In 1895, a team led by Jesse Walter Fewkes started digging at Sikyátki. This work was supported by the Smithsonian Institution, a famous research center. During their digs, they found many pieces of old pottery. These pieces are called "sherds." The sherds were very well-preserved.

Amazing Pottery Discoveries

The pottery pieces found at Sikyátki were special. They had unique and beautiful designs. These designs greatly inspired a famous artist named Nampeyo. She was a Hopi-Tewa potter. Her work helped start a new style of pottery known as the Sikyátki revival. This revival brought back the old, colorful designs of Sikyátki pottery. It is a very important part of Native American pottery history.

The Story of Sikyátki

The name Sikyátki means "Yellow House" in the Hopi language. The Hopi people have many stories passed down through generations. One of these stories tells about the end of Sikyátki.

A Village Conflict

According to the oral tradition, Sikyátki was burned down. Its people were scattered or lost. This happened because of a conflict with a nearby village called Wálpi. The story says that a serious argument escalated into violence. This led to a tragic event involving people from both villages. The dispute grew, and eventually, the village of Sikyátki was destroyed by Wálpi.
