The silent grass mouse (Akodon surdus), also called the slate-bellied akodont, is a small rodent that belongs to the Cricetidae family. It is a unique animal found only in Peru.
Where the Silent Grass Mouse Lives
The silent grass mouse mostly lives in the Cusco Region of southeastern Peru. It can be found in mountains at heights between 1,500 and 3,000 meters (about 4,900 to 9,800 feet) above sea level. This mouse prefers to live in wet mountain forests. It can even survive in areas where some trees have been cut down.
Why the Silent Grass Mouse is in Danger
The silent grass mouse is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. This means its population is decreasing, and it could become endangered if things don't change. The main reasons for this decline are human activities. People are building more homes and farms, and cutting down forests for wood. These actions destroy the Andean forests where the silent grass mouse lives, making it harder for them to survive.
