Silla + Rise is a music group from Canada. They are based in Ottawa. Their music mixes old traditions with new sounds. Their album Debut was nominated for a Juno Award in 2017. This award was for the best Indigenous Music Album of the Year. Their album Galactic Gala was also nominated for a Juno Award in 2020. That nomination was for World Music Album of the Year.
Who are Silla + Rise?
Silla + Rise is made up of four talented people. The vocalists are Cynthia Pitsiulak, Charlotte Qamaniq, and Charlotte Carleton. The DJ is Eric "Rise Ashen" Vani. Together, they create a special sound.
Their Unique Sound
The group blends two very different music styles. They combine traditional Inuit throat singing with electronic dance music. Inuit throat singing is a special vocal art from the Inuit people. It often sounds like breathing or animal noises. Electronic dance music uses computers and machines to make beats and sounds.
Even though these styles seem different, the group says they have things in common. For example, both can feel like a friendly competition. In throat singing, performers try to make each other laugh. The first one to laugh "loses" the round.
Cynthia Pitsiulak is from Kimmirut. Charlotte Qamaniq is from Igloolik. Both of these places are in Nunavut, Canada. Cynthia and Charlotte have been performing throat singing since 2005.
Awards and Recognition
Silla + Rise has been recognized for their unique music. Their first album, Debut, was nominated for a Juno Award in 2017. The Juno Awards are like the Grammy Awards for Canadian music. Their nomination was for Indigenous Music Album of the Year.
Their second album, Galactic Gala, also received a Juno Award nomination. This happened in 2020. It was nominated for World Music Album of the Year. These nominations show how much people appreciate their blend of traditional and modern music.
