History of Silver Lake Township
Early Beginnings: Land Purchase
The story of Silver Lake Township began on February 18, 1809. A person named Dr. Robert H. Rose bought a huge amount of land, about 100,000 acres! This land was then part of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. A big piece of what Dr. Rose bought later became all of Silver Lake Township.
The land was sold to Dr. Rose by Anne Francis. William Penn's grandson, Richard Penn Jr., also signed the papers. This showed he agreed to the sale because he had an interest in the land.
Forming the Township
Just a few years later, on April 27, 1813, Silver Lake Township was officially created. It was formed from the northern part of another area called Bridgewater Township. This was an important step in organizing the local government.
The Village of Brackney
In 1848, a man named J.W. Brackney from New York founded a small village within the township. This village was named Brackney after him. He started a large tannery there, which was a place that processed animal hides into leather.
