Silver Run is a small, unincorporated community in Mississippi. This means it is a place where people live, but it does not have its own city government. It is located about 18 kilometers (11 miles) southwest of Wiggins, Mississippi. Silver Run is part of the larger Gulfport-Biloxi metropolitan area. The community's name comes from a natural stream that flows through the area.
The Story of Silver Run
The Silver Run community was started in 1874. It was settled by four families who were farmers. They built a small school, a church, and a graveyard. The Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church was established in 1871. It is still active today as the Silver Run Baptist Church. Many people who live there now are descendants of those first families.
Today, Silver Run has a busy general store. It also has a volunteer fire department and a public library. The community is located in parts of eastern Pearl River County and western Stone County.
Silver Run Lakes: A Special Place
Silver Run Lakes is a neighborhood built around lakes that people created. The idea for Silver Run Lakes started as a camp for children. However, there was not enough money to support it at first.
Construction of the first man-made lake, called Silver Run, began in 1961. To help pay for the building, land lots were measured around the lake. These lots were then sold as places for camping and fun activities.
The children's camp opened in 1962. It attracted kids from all over southern Mississippi and New Orleans. Camp activities included fishing, swimming, hay rides, campfires, and learning about farm life. The camp only lasted for three years.
Over the years, more lakes were built. More land lots were measured and sold. Homes were built, and a sewer system was put in place. Roads were also constructed. By 2010, there were 15 man-made lakes. The two largest lakes are Silver Run Lake and Rogers Lake, each about 100 acres (40 hectares) in size.
