History of the Silver Spring Station
The Silver Spring station has a rich history, with different buildings over the years.
The First Station
The very first station building was built in 1878. It was made of brick and looked like a Victorian-style building. Imagine a building with lots of fancy details from a long time ago!
The Current Building
The building you see today was built in 1945. It was constructed on the same spot where the older station stood. This newer building was designed in the Colonial Revival style. This style looks a bit like the old houses from America's early days. It was built using special plans for B&O train stations from the 1940s.
The Eastbound Waiting Room
There used to be another small building called the Eastbound Waiting Room. It was on the other side of the train tracks. This building was also built in 1945. It was taken down and rebuilt in 1976. This happened to make room for new tracks for the Washington Metro subway system.
The Secret Tunnel
An underground tunnel connects where the two buildings used to be. This tunnel goes under the train tracks. It's not open to the public anymore, but it's still there!
Train Services Over the Years
Many trains used to stop at the Silver Spring station.
Amtrak and MARC Trains
Amtrak's Blue Ridge train used to serve this station. But that service stopped in 1986. MARC trains also used the station. Their service ended in 2000.
Where Trains Stop Now
Today, MARC trains stop at a different station nearby. This newer station is also called Silver Spring station. At the new station, you can easily transfer to the Washington Metro subway.
A Historic Landmark
The 1945 station is very important.
National Register of Historic Places
In 2000, the station was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special building that is important to history. It's officially known as the Silver Spring Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Station.
Restoration and Tours
After being listed as historic, the station was fixed up in 2002. This process is called restoration. Today, the station is owned by a group called Montgomery Preservation, Inc. This group is a non-profit organization. They sometimes open the building for tours. This lets people see inside and learn about its history.
Inside the Station
When you go inside the station, you can see some cool original features.
Original Features
The main waiting room still has its original furniture from the 1940s. Even the old recessed fluorescent lighting fixtures are still there! It's like stepping back in time.
