Early Life and Learning to Carve
Simeonie Amagoalik was born on May 1, 1933, in Inukjuak, a community in Northern Quebec. He began carving when he was 14 years old. He learned this skill from an American who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company. Simeonie used materials like soapstone and tusks to create his art.
Moving to the High Arctic
In 1953, Simeonie Amagoalik and his family, along with ten other Inuit families, were moved to Resolute. This move was part of a government program called the High Arctic relocation. In 1963, he met his wife, Eetoolook, when they were both getting treatment for tuberculosis.
A Monument to History
Simeonie Amagoalik played a part in the early talks for the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. This agreement helped create the territory of Nunavut. The Canadian government asked Simeonie and another artist, Looty Pijamini, to create a special monument. This monument remembers the High Arctic relocation that happened in 1955. Simeonie's monument is located in Resolute, where he lived.
