Looty Pijamini (ᓘᑎ ᐱᔭᒥᓂ; born 1953) is a famous Inuit artist from Canada. He is known for his amazing sculptures. Looty Pijamini lives and works in a community called Grise Fiord in Nunavut, which is in the far north of Canada.
About Looty Pijamini
Looty Pijamini was born on November 14, 1953. His birthplace was Clyde River, Nunavut. When he was about eight years old, in 1961, his family moved to Grise Fiord. This move happened because his father, who worked as a special police officer for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, was sent to work there.
Creating Important Art
Looty Pijamini is a very important artist. The Canadian government asked him to create a special monument. A monument is like a statue or structure built to remember something important. This monument was to honor the High Arctic relocation. This was a time in 1955 when many Inuit families were moved from their homes to new places in the High Arctic.
Pijamini worked with another artist named Simeonie Amagoalik on this project. Pijamini's monument is located in Grise Fiord, where he lives. It shows a woman with a young boy and a husky dog. The woman looks sad as she gazes out towards the ocean. Pijamini said he made them look sad on purpose. He wanted to show that the relocation was not a happy event for the Inuit people.
The monument was officially revealed in September 2010. Many people praised it, including the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, which is a big news organization in Canada. It helps people remember an important part of Inuit history.
