Simon Burton was an important English doctor who lived a long time ago, from around 1690 to 1744. He was known for his medical skills and even became a doctor for the King!
Simon Burton's Early Life and Education
Simon Burton was born in a place called Warwickshire, England, around the year 1690. His father was Humphrey Burton, and his mother was Judith Bohun.
When he was younger, Simon went to Rugby School, which is a famous school even today. After that, he continued his studies at New College, Oxford, a well-known university. He worked hard and earned several degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) on November 29, 1710
- Master of Arts (M.A.) on May 26, 1714
- Bachelor of Medicine (M.B.) on April 20, 1716
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) on July 21, 1720
Becoming a Doctor in London
After finishing his studies, Simon Burton first worked as a doctor in Warwick, a town in England. After some years, he decided to move to London, the capital city. He set up his practice in an area called Savile Row and quickly became a very popular doctor with many patients.
His skills were recognized by other doctors. On April 12, 1731, he was accepted as a candidate at the Royal College of Physicians. This is a very old and respected group of doctors. He became a full member, or "fellow," of the college on April 3, 1732.
Royal Physician and Later Years
Simon Burton's career continued to grow. On October 19, 1733, he was appointed as a doctor at St. George's Hospital, a major hospital in London. Later, he became a "royal physician in ordinary." This meant he was one of the personal doctors to the King or Queen!
He was one of the doctors who took care of the famous poet Alexander Pope when Pope was very sick for the last time. Simon Burton passed away shortly after Alexander Pope, on June 11, 1744. He died at his home in Savile Row after being sick for only a few days.
