The seat for the 58th district became open in 2009. This happened when the previous representative, Robbin Shipp, resigned. A special election was held on November 3, 2009. Simone Bell was one of five candidates. She received 24% of the votes, placing second.
Because no one won more than half the votes, a second election was held. This is called a runoff election. In the runoff, Simone Bell won against Asha Jackson. She received 56% of the votes. Chief Justice Carol Hunstein officially swore her into office. This happened on December 22, 2009.
Her Time in Office
Simone Bell ran for re-election in 2010 and won without anyone running against her. She also won her re-election campaigns in 2012 and 2014. She resigned from her position on October 29, 2015. Her last day in office was November 13, 2015. She left to join Lambda Legal as their Southern Regional Director. Park Cannon succeeded her in the Georgia House of Representatives.
