The 58th district seat was previously held by Representative Robbin Shipp. She resigned in 2009. This led to a special election to choose a new representative. The election took place on November 3, 2009. Simone Bell received 24% of the votes. She came in second place among five candidates.
Winning the Runoff Election
Because no candidate won more than half the votes, a second election was held. This is called a runoff election. In the runoff, Simone Bell won against Asha Jackson. Bell received 56% of the votes. She was sworn into office on December 22, 2009. Chief Justice Carol Hunstein of the Georgia Supreme Court officially swore her in.
Her Time in Office
Simone Bell ran for re-election in 2010 and had no opponents. She won again in 2012 and 2014. In those elections, she defeated Ralph Long in the primary elections.
Resignation from Office
On October 29, 2015, Simone Bell announced she would be leaving her position. She resigned to take on a new role. She became the Southern Regional Director for Lambda Legal. Her resignation became official on November 13, 2015. After she left, Park Cannon succeeded her in the Georgia House of Representatives.
