Simone Peterzano (around 1535–1599) was an Italian painter. He was born in Bergamo, but he often spoke about his connections to Venice. He likely learned to paint there.

Peterzano painted in a style called Mannerist. This style often used exaggerated forms and dramatic colors. He is most famous for being the teacher of the very well-known artist, Caravaggio.

Early Life and Training

Simone Peterzano said he was a student of Titian. Titian was one of the greatest Italian painters. Peterzano sometimes signed his paintings "titiani alumnus", which means "student of Titian."

Peterzano's Artworks

Peterzano started his career in Milan. One of his first big projects was painting frescoes in the San Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore church in 1573. These paintings showed the influence of other famous artists like Veronese and Tintoretto.

In the same year, he painted two large pictures for the church of San Barnaba. These showed stories about Saint Paul and Saint Barnabas. Around this time, he also painted a Pietà (a scene of Mary holding Jesus after his crucifixion) for the church of San Fedele. He also created a Pentecost for San Paolo Converso, which is now in Sant'Eufemia.

Important Frescoes

Between 1578 and 1582, Peterzano worked on frescoes at the Garegnano Charterhouse. These are considered some of his best works. Frescoes are paintings done on wet plaster walls.

During this time, he also painted a Nativity with saints and angels. This painting can be found in the church of Santa Maria di Canepanova in Pavia.

Later Works

Peterzano's later paintings have a strong, serious look. They include a fresco showing stories of Saint Anthony of Padua for the church of Sant'Angelo.

He also painted a Madonna with Child and Saints for a church in Bioggio in Canton Ticino. One of his last major works was an altarpiece for the Duomo of Milan in 1592. This painting, called St. Ambrose between Sts. Gervasius and Protasius, is now in the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana museum.
