History of Sinaloa de Leyva

Founding the Town in 1583

The town was first started on April 30, 1583. It was named Villa de San Felipe y Santiago de Sinaloa by a person named Don Pedro de Montoya.

Two years later, in 1585, the town was established again. This time, Antonio Ruiz, Bartolomé de Mondragón, Tomás de Soberanes, Juan Martínez del Castillo, and Juan Caballero helped to set it up.

Early Life and Growth

By 1590, Antonio Ruiz was the mayor of the town. Only nine people lived there, and they worked hard to make a living. Things got better when they found mines in a place called Chínipas.

More help arrived in 1591 with Jesuit missionaries Gonzalo de Tapia and Martín Pérez. At the end of the 1500s, Mayor Ruiz wrote about the early history of San Felipe y Santiago and Sinaloa.

Building a Fort: The Presidio

In 1595, a leader named Luis de Velasco agreed to build a fort, called a presidio, in San Felipe y Santiago. A captain named Alonso Díaz was sent with 24 soldiers to build it.

The Sinaloa presidio was the most northwestern fort in New Spain for a long time. It was a very important base.

Expanding Spanish Control

This fort helped Diego de Hurdaide to bring the Sinaloas, Tehuecos, Ahomes, and Zuaques people under Spanish control. It also helped Spain expand its power over the Fuerte River valley. This meant Spanish control reached the northern part of what is now modern Sinaloa.
