Sinclair, Hamilton and Company facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sinclair, Hamilton & Company was a British company that sold weapons. It was one of the two main companies that supplied weapons to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Archibald Hamilton and his brother Robert started the company in 1854.

During the war, Sinclair, Hamilton & Company often worked with S. Isaac, Campbell & Company. Both companies helped the Confederacy get weapons. They worked with agents like Majors Caleb Huse and James Bulloch. These agents were sent to Britain by Josiah Gorgas to buy weapons for the Confederacy. The British companies acted as middlemen, connecting the Confederacy with weapon makers in England.

Why the Confederacy Needed Weapons

When the American Civil War started in 1861, the Southern states, known as the Confederacy, did not make many weapons. They desperately needed guns, military supplies, and other items. They could not get these from the Northern states, which were now their enemies.

The Confederacy also did not have a strong navy. This made it hard to stop the Union's blockade, which prevented ships from entering or leaving Southern ports. So, the Confederates looked to other countries for help. They turned to British weapon makers who already sold weapons to many European countries.

A big problem for the Confederate army was arming its soldiers. Southern arsenals, which are places where weapons are stored, had only about 150,000 shoulder arms. Most of these were old flint-lock muskets from the Revolutionary War. They had very few modern rifles, which the Union Army already had.

Archibald Hamilton was a main leader of Sinclair, Hamilton & Company. He supported the Confederacy. He was also a leader at another company called Fraser, Trenholm and Co. Archibald Hamilton was an expert on weapons. He knew all the weapon makers in England and often arranged deals with them. He also directed the London Armoury Company, another important weapon buying company in London.

Other leaders at Sinclair, Hamilton & Company included Robert Adams, Richard Ashton, Archibald Cockburn, and John Shorter, who were merchants. William Dray was an engineer and manufacturer, and George Fry was a lawyer for the company.

Charles K. Prioleau, a main partner at Trenholm, became interested in helping the Confederacy. The cotton trade, which was very important for both the Southern states and the mills in Lancashire, stopped because of the Civil War and the Union blockade. Prioleau wanted to save his business. His company started sending weapons and supplies to the Confederate states. Soon, they were also buying and preparing warships for the Confederacy.

Many of the weapons sold by Sinclair, Hamilton & Company came from Robert Taylor Pritchett. He was a British gun maker and inventor. Like many other weapon dealers, he saw a chance to make money during the American Civil War. Pritchett was famous for his designs and improvements to Enfield rifles.
