How Sing Up Started
Sing Up began in 2007. The government wanted more children to sing, so they invested money to create a national singing program. This helped Sing Up grow and become a lasting organization.
From 2009 to 2011, different groups worked together to lead Sing Up. Youth Music was the main partner. Faber Music helped create the online song library. The Sage Gateshead trained teachers and musicians. They helped adults feel more confident leading singing activities for kids.
A famous composer named Howard Goodall supported Sing Up from 2009 to 2011. He was the National Singing Ambassador. Sing Up won the RPS Award in 2010. In 2013, a national plan for music education praised the program.
Sing Up's Impact
A study in 2013 found that children who used Sing Up were much better at singing. They were about 18 months to 2 years ahead of other children. Research also shows that singing helps with language skills and memory. It can also improve motor skills and overall music learning.
Since 2009, Sing Up has worked with over 86,000 singers. They have reached 98% of primary schools and special education schools in England. More than 8,000 music teachers have also used their resources. The Sing Up website has over 2,000 helpful tools.
Many schools have earned a Sing Up Award for promoting singing. Over 1,730 schools have received an award. This includes 831 Silver, 565 Gold, and 134 Platinum awards. More than 57,000 people have also taken part in Sing Up's training programs.
Becoming a Not-for-Profit
In April 2012, Sing Up became a not-for-profit organisation. This means they use their money to help their mission, not to make a profit. They started offering memberships for schools and teachers. Since 2016, people from other countries can also join.
Sing Up was recognized for its work. In 2017, they were nominated for the Best Digital/Technological Resource award. In 2018, they won the Music Teacher Editors Award.
In 2017, Sing Up also started the Sing Up Foundation. This charity focuses on how singing can help with health and well-being.
