Sir Archibald Murray was the son of Sir Alexander Murray, who was the 2nd Baronet of Blackbarony. His mother was Margaret Cockburn. Sir Archibald married Mary Keith, who was the daughter of William Keith, the 7th Earl Marischal. They had seven children together. He passed away sometime before May 28, 1700.
Serving in the Scottish Parliament
Sir Archibald Murray was a commissioner for Peeblesshire. This meant he represented his area in the Parliament of Scotland. He served many terms, from 1661 to 1698. This shows he was a very active and trusted member of the government for a long time.
Military and Royal Appointments
Sir Archibald Murray also had a military career. In 1669, King Charles II made him a Lieutenant-Colonel. He served in the Militia Regiment for Linlithgowshire and Peeblesshire.
In 1680, he received a special task. He was asked to find and deal with Covenanters in Peeblesshire. Covenanters were a group of Scottish Presbyterians. This was especially for those who had been involved in the Battle of Bothwell Brig in 1679.
Later, in 1689, King William III gave him another important job. Sir Archibald became the "Sole Master of Work, Overseer, and Director-General of their Majesties' buildings." This meant he was in charge of all royal buildings in Scotland. This position had been empty since 1678.
