Commodore Sir Atwell Henry Lake, 9th Baronet, CB, OBE (born February 13, 1891 – died November 27, 1972) was a very important officer in the Royal Navy. He also served as the second Chief of Naval Staff for the Royal New Zealand Navy. He held this top leadership position from June 1942 to July 1945.

Early Life and Family
Atwell Lake was born in 1891 in Greenwich, London. His family had a strong connection to the navy. His father, Atwell Peregrine Macleod Lake, was also an Admiral. An Admiral is a very high-ranking officer in the navy. His grandfather was Sir Henry Atwell Lake.
Rising Through the Ranks
Atwell Lake joined the Royal Navy in 1904. He worked hard and moved up through different ranks. On June 30, 1927, he was promoted to Commander. A Commander is a senior officer in the navy. Later, on December 31, 1932, he became a Captain. This showed his growing skill and experience.
During the Second World War, Atwell Lake took on a very important role. From June 1942 to July 1945, he was the Chief of Naval Staff for the Royal New Zealand Navy. This meant he was in charge of all naval operations and planning for New Zealand. It was a crucial job during wartime.
Awards and Recognition
For his excellent service, Atwell Lake received several high honors. The United States Armed Forces awarded him the Commander of the Legion of Merit. This is a special military award given for outstanding service. In 1946, the King allowed him to wear this award. In 1945, he was also made a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in the United Kingdom. This is a British award for excellent service.
