Early Life and Family
Sir Charles Cope was the oldest son of Jonathan Cope. His father was born in 1717 in a place called Sarsden, Oxfordshire, and passed away in 1763. Sir Charles's mother was Arabella Howard, who was the daughter of Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle.
Becoming a Baronet and Public Service
In April 1765, Sir Charles became the 2nd Baronet after his grandfather passed away. A 'Baronet' is a special British title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.
From 1773 to 1774, he also served as the Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire. A Sheriff was an important official who helped keep law and order in a county.
Marriage and Children
In 1767, Sir Charles Cope married Catherine Bishopp. She was the youngest daughter of Sir Cecil Bishopp, 6th Baronet. Catherine's mother was Anne Boscawen, whose father was Hugh Boscawen, 1st Viscount Falmouth.
His Death and Family's Future
Sir Charles Cope passed away on June 14, 1781. He was buried four days later in Hanwell, Oxfordshire.
His oldest son, also named Charles, became the 3rd Baronet. This young Charles was a student at Eton College, a famous school. Sadly, the 3rd Baronet died at just 11 years old on December 25, 1781, and was also buried in Hanwell.
After the young 3rd Baronet's death, the title of Baronet went to Sir Charles Cope's half-brother, Jonathan. The family's lands and wealth were then passed to the 3rd Baronet's two sisters: Arabella Diana and Charlotte Anne. Both sisters married important noblemen:
- Arabella Diana married John Sackville, 3rd Duke of Dorset.
- Charlotte Anne married George Gordon, 5th Earl of Aboyne. He later became the 9th Marquess of Huntly after her death.
Catherine Bishopp's Later Life
Catherine Bishopp, Sir Charles Cope's wife, was born on November 30, 1744. After Sir Charles died, she married again. Her second husband was Charles Jenkinson, 1st Earl of Liverpool. They married on June 22, 1782, at her home in Hertford Street, London. Catherine lived a long life and passed away at the age of 82 on October 1, 1827, in the same house. She was buried on October 10, 1827, in Buxted, Sussex.
