Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Jonathan Cope, 4th Baronet (born around 1758 – died December 30, 1821) was an important British gentleman from a noble family. He held the title of Baronet, which is a special inherited title, similar to a knight but passed down through the family.

Early Life and Family Connections

Jonathan Cope was the second son in his family. His father was also named Jonathan Cope, and his grandfather was Sir Jonathan Cope, 1st Baronet. His mother, Jane, was the second wife of his father. She was the daughter of a military leader named Francis Leighton.

Jonathan became the 4th Baronet in December 1781. This happened when his nephew, Charles, sadly passed away at only eleven years old while attending Eton College. Charles was the son of Jonathan's older half-brother, Charles.

Military Service

In 1782, Sir Jonathan Cope joined the military. He served as a cornet in the 21st Light Dragoons. A cornet was a junior officer rank in cavalry units, similar to a second lieutenant today.

Sir Jonathan Cope married Annabella Candler in April 1778. Annabella was the daughter of William Candler, who was a Captain in the 10th Regiment of Foot. Her family lived in places like County Kilkenny in Ireland and Acomb, North Yorkshire in England.

Sir Jonathan and Annabella had three sons, but sadly, all of them passed away before their parents.

Because all of his sons had died before him, the title of Baronet ended with Sir Jonathan. It could not be passed on to anyone else. His property in Moreton Pinkney, Northamptonshire, was then inherited by his wife's nephew, Edward Candler.
