Charles Farnaby was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Farnaby, who was the 2nd Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. His mother was Mary Lloyd. Charles probably went to Eton College, a famous school, from 1747 to 1754.

When his father passed away on March 24, 1760, Charles became the 3rd Baronet. He married Penelope Charlton on August 12, 1762. Penelope was a widow and the daughter of John Radcliffe. Her family owned a large estate called Hitchin Priory in Hertfordshire. When Penelope's brother, also named John Radcliffe, died in 1783, she inherited Hitchin Priory. Because of this important family connection, Charles added "Radcliffe" to his name in 1784, becoming Sir Charles Farnaby-Radcliffe.

Becoming a Member of Parliament

Sir Charles first became a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called East Grinstead. This happened in a special election on December 30, 1765. He was supported by a powerful person named Lord George Sackville.

Later, in the 1768 general election, Sir Charles and Lord Sackville both tried to get elected in Hythe. However, they were not successful that time. But Sir Charles didn't give up! He was then elected without anyone opposing him for Kent on February 15, 1769.

His Time in Parliament

Sir Charles returned to represent Hythe in the 1774 general election. He had support from the government at the time. He was elected for Hythe again in 1780 and 1784. Each time, he received the most votes!

His family's lands in Kent gave him a lot of influence. This meant he was a very respected and powerful person in the area. Because of his strong local support, he was elected for Hythe without any competition in both the 1790 and 1796 elections. Even though he was an MP for a long time, it is not known if he ever gave any speeches in Parliament.

Sir Charles Farnaby-Radcliffe passed away in October 1798 after being ill for some time. He was buried at Hitchin on October 20, 1798.
