Sir Edward Leslie (born 1744, died November 21, 1818) was an important politician from Ireland. He was known as the 1st Baronet of Tarbert.

Who Was Sir Edward Leslie?

Sir Edward Leslie was the son of Bishop James Leslie and Joyce Lyster. He grew up to become a significant figure in Irish politics during the late 1700s and early 1800s.

Sir Edward's Political Career

From 1787 to 1790, Sir Edward Leslie was a Member of Parliament. This means he was elected to represent the area of Old Leighlin in the Irish House of Commons. The Irish House of Commons was like a parliament or a big meeting place where laws were made for Ireland at that time.

On September 3, 1787, he was given the special title of a baronet. This title meant he was a "Sir" and was part of a special group of people called the Baronetage of Ireland. His title was linked to Tarbert, a place in County Kerry, Ireland.

Leading the Loyal Tarbert Regiment

Sir Edward Leslie also played a role in the military. On July 27, 1798, he helped create a group of soldiers called the Loyal Tarbert Regiment. These were a type of part-time soldiers known as fencibles. Sir Edward became the colonel, or leader, of this regiment. The regiment served for a few years and was officially ended in Plymouth on June 19, 1802.

Sir Edward Leslie's Family

In 1773, Sir Edward Leslie married Anne Cane. They had a daughter named Louisa. Sir Edward did not have any sons, so when he passed away, his special title of Baronet ended. His daughter, Louisa, later married Lord Douglas Gordon-Hallyburton.
