Sir Francis had a younger sister named Helena Caroline Winnington. She married a Member of Parliament (MP) named Frederick Hanbury-Tracy. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's parliament.
His family had many notable members. His grandfather was Sir Thomas Winnington, 3rd Baronet. Another grandfather, Sir Compton Domvile, was an MP in Ireland. Sir Francis also had cousins who held important positions, like Arthur Winnington-Ingram, who became the Bishop of London.
What Did Sir Francis Do?
Sir Francis took over the title of 5th Baronet of Stanford Court on June 18, 1872. This happened after his father passed away. His father had also been an MP for a place called Bewdley.
Sir Francis served in the military as an ensign in the 66th Foot. An ensign was a junior officer who carried the regiment's flag.
He held several important roles in Worcestershire:
- High Sheriff of Worcestershire: In 1894, Sir Francis became the High Sheriff. This was a very old and respected position. The High Sheriff was responsible for law and order in the county. Sir Francis's father had also been High Sheriff in 1852.
- Justice of the Peace (JP): As a JP, Sir Francis helped to keep the peace and deal with minor legal cases in his local area.
- Deputy Lieutenant (DL): This role meant he assisted the Lord-Lieutenant, who was the King's or Queen's representative in the county.
