Sir Thomas Edward Winnington (1780 – 1839) was an important British politician. He was a member of the Whig and Liberal parties. These were major political groups in Britain during his time. Sir Thomas served in the House of Commons, which is a main part of the British Parliament, for many years.

Early Life and Education

Thomas Edward Winnington was born in 1780. His parents were Sir Edward Winnington, 2nd Baronet, and Anne Foley. His family lived at Stanford Court in Stanford-on-Teme, Worcestershire, England. This was a large family estate.

Thomas went to Eton College, a famous school, and finished there in 1793. After that, he studied at Christ Church, Oxford, a well-known university. He completed his studies in 1798.

Political Career

In 1805, Thomas inherited the Stanford Court estate from his father. This made him a significant landowner. The next year, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Worcestershire for 1806 to 1807. A High Sheriff was a very old and important local official.

Sir Thomas Winnington became a Member of Parliament (MP) in 1807. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. He first represented the area of Droitwich and held this position until 1816.

He was elected again for Droitwich in 1831. He served for one year this time. In 1832, he was elected as the MP for Bewdley. He continued to represent Bewdley until 1837. After this, his son, also named Thomas, took over his seat in Parliament.

Family Life

On November 11, 1810, Sir Thomas Winnington married Joanna Taylor. She was the daughter of John Taylor. Together, they had seven children: three sons and four daughters.

Their eldest son was Sir Thomas Edward Winnington (1811–1872). He also became a politician and continued the family's public service.

Sir Thomas Edward Winnington passed away on September 24, 1839. His eldest surviving son, Thomas, then became the next Baronet.
