Who Was Sir Hector Maclean?
Hector Maclean was the son of Sir Lachlan Maclean, 1st Baronet. When his father passed away in 1649, Hector became the new leader. His mother was Mary MacLeod, who was the second daughter of Sir Roderick MacLeod. After Sir Hector's death in 1651, his brother, Sir Allan Maclean, 3rd Baronet, became the next Clan Chief.
Sir Hector's Role in Battle
Sir Hector was killed while fighting for Scotland. This happened during a famous conflict known as the Battle of Inverkeithing. This battle is remembered for a very brave act by members of Clan Maclean.
The Brave Clan Maclean Slogan
During the Battle of Inverkeithing, seven brothers from the Clan Maclean showed incredible loyalty. They died one by one protecting their chief, Sir Hector. Each time a brother fell, another would step forward. They would shout, "Another for Hector!" This phrase, Fear eile airson Eachuinn in Scottish Gaelic, became one of the main sayings, or slogans, of the Clan Maclean. It shows their strong spirit and dedication.
