Sir Henry Ainslie Hoare (born April 14, 1824, died July 7, 1894) was an English banker and a politician. He was part of the Liberal Party. He served in the House of Commons, which is a main part of the British Parliament, between 1866 and 1874. He also held the title of a Baronet, which is a special hereditary title.
Sir Henry Hoare's Life Story
Henry Hoare was the son of Henry Charles Hoare and Anne Penelope Ainslie. He went to two well-known schools: Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge. After his education, he joined his family's banking business, called Messrs Hoare and Co..
In 1857, he inherited the title of Baronet from his uncle, Sir Hugh Richard Hoare. This meant he became the 5th Baronet in the Hoare family. After this, he moved to a beautiful estate called Stourhead. He also served as a Justice of the Peace and a Deputy Lieutenant for the areas of Somerset and Wiltshire. These were important roles in local government.
His Time in Politics
In 1865, Henry Hoare was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Windsor. However, he lost this position in 1866. He tried again in the 1868 election. This time, he was elected as an MP for Chelsea. He kept this seat in Parliament until 1874.
Sir Henry had a personality that liked new things and enjoyed expensive hobbies. These included hunting and horse racing. Because of this, he sometimes faced financial challenges. In 1883, during a difficult time for farming in Britain, he had to sell many valuable items from Stourhead. These included a collection of books on British history and some beautiful watercolor paintings by the artist Turner.
Later in his life, Sir Henry left Stourhead and lived in France. He became ill in 1894. He then returned to London and passed away at the age of 70. He was buried at Stourton, near Stourhead.
His Family
Sir Henry Hoare married Augusta Frances Clayton East in 1845. She was the daughter of Sir East George Clayton East. Their only son passed away when he was a child. Because of this, the Baronet title went to a cousin after Sir Henry's death.
They also had a daughter named Augusta Frances Anne. She married William John Nettleship Angerstein in 1868. Later, in 1894, she married James St Aubyn Hastie, who was in the Indian Army.
