Life of Sir Hugh Paterson
Sir Hugh Paterson was born around the year 1659. His family owned a large estate called Bannockburn. His father had bought this land from another noble family. Sir Hugh built most of the house that stands there today. The house looks very much the same as it did when he lived there.
The Paterson family strongly supported the King. They were known as Royalists. King James VII gave Hugh the title of Baronet of Bannockburn. This was a special honor.
Sir Hugh Paterson died on December 21, 1701. His son, the Second Baronet, took over the title. His son was a strong Jacobite. This meant he supported the family of King James II for the throne. Even so, he continued to live at Bannockburn House.
Later, Charles Edward Stuart, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, stayed at the house. While there, he met Clementina Walkinshaw. She was the niece of the Second Baronet. Clementina later had a daughter with Prince Charles Edward Stuart.
Sir Hugh's Family
Sir Hugh Paterson married Barbara Ruthven. She was born around 1663 and died in 1695. Barbara was the daughter of Sir William Ruthven. Her mother was Katherine Douglas. Katherine was the daughter of the 1st Marquess of Douglas.
Sir Hugh's son, Sir Hugh Paterson, 2nd Baronet, married Jane Erskine. Jane was the daughter of the Earl of Mar. Her brother was James Erskine, Lord Grange. This marriage connected the Patersons to many important families. James's wife was Rachel Chiesley, Lady Grange.
