Sir John Rose Bradford was an important British doctor.

Sir John Rose Bradford (born May 7, 1863 – died April 7, 1935) was a famous British doctor and scientist. He was known for his research into how the body works and for his leadership in medical organizations.

Early Life and Education

John Rose Bradford was born in London, England. His father was a high-ranking doctor in the Royal Navy, which is the British navy. John went to school at University College School and also studied in Bruges, a city in Belgium. He then went to University College in London to become a doctor, finishing his studies in 1883.

A Career in Medicine and Research

After becoming a doctor, John Rose Bradford worked at University College Hospital. He became an Assistant Physician there in 1889. Later, he also worked at the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic from 1893 to 1896.

His Scientific Discoveries

Sir John was very interested in how the human body works, especially in research. He studied things like how electricity affects body fluids and how medicines change the way kidneys work. He also looked at how nerves control blood vessels. Because of his important work, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1894. This is a very respected group of scientists. In 1898, he wrote a book called Clinical Lectures on Nephritis, which was about kidney diseases.

Leading Medical Organizations

In 1895, Sir John became a professor at the Brown Institution, where he worked for eight years. At the same time, he also taught medicine at University College. He later became a full Professor of Medicine.

He became a full Physician at University College Hospital in 1897. After this, he spent more time leading and organizing medical work. He was in charge of many committees and became the Secretary of the Royal Society. He also learned a lot about diseases found in tropical countries while working at the Seamen's Hospital. From 1912 to 1924, he was the main medical advisor for the Colonial Office, which looked after British colonies around the world.

He was also elected as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He gave several important lectures there, including the Goulstonian Lecture (1898) and the Croonian Lecture (1904). He later became the President of the College from 1926 to 1930. During his time as President, the College celebrated 300 years since a very important book about the heart was published.

Service During Wartime

During the First World War, Sir John Rose Bradford served as a top medical doctor for the British Army in France. He worked for five years with the rank of Major-General, helping soldiers who were injured or sick.

For his important work and service, he received several special awards. He was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1911. He also became a Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1915 and a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1919. In 1931, he was given the special title of baronet.

Personal Life

In 1899, John Rose Bradford married Mary Roberts. They did not have any children. He passed away in London in 1935.
