Sir John Cope was an important person in British politics and banking a long time ago. He was a "Baronet," which is a special title that passes down in a family. He worked as a politician in the House of Commons for 36 years, from 1705 to 1741. He also helped run the Bank of England as a Director from 1706 to 1721.
Early Life and Family
John Cope was born in 1673. His father was also named Sir John Cope, who was the 5th Baronet. When John was 16, he went to Oriel College, Oxford in 1689.
In 1696, he received the title of "Knight." That same year, he married Alice Monoux. By the year 1700, he bought a large house and estate called Bramshill for a lot of money, with help from his father.
Political Career
Sir John Cope wanted to be a politician. He tried to get elected to Parliament in 1701 and 1702 but didn't win.
In 1705, he was finally elected as a Member of Parliament for Plympton Erle. He was part of the Whig political group. In 1706, he became a Director of the Bank of England, helping to manage the country's money. He kept this job until 1721.
In 1708, he became an MP for Tavistock. He continued to support the Whig party. He was re-elected several times for Tavistock.
In 1721, he inherited his father's title and became the 6th Baronet. In 1727, he was elected as an MP for Hampshire. His last time as an MP was for Lymington, from 1734 until he retired from politics.
Later Life and Legacy
Sir John Cope passed away on 8 December 1749. He had two sons and one daughter. His son, Sir Monoux Cope, 7th Baronet, took over his title as the next Baronet.
