Sir John Dryden (born around 1580, died around 1658) was an important English politician. He served in the English Parliament, called the House of Commons, during two different periods between 1640 and 1654.

Who Was Sir John Dryden?

Sir John Dryden was born around 1580. His father was Sir Erasmus Dryden, 1st Baronet, who was the first Baronet of the Dryden family. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. His mother was Frances Wilkes.

In 1632, when his father passed away, John became the 2nd Baronet. He also held an important local job. In 1634, he was the High Sheriff of Northamptonshire. This role meant he was a key leader in that area.

His Time in Parliament

Being a Member of Parliament (MP) meant Sir John helped make laws for England. In November 1640, he was chosen to be an MP for Northamptonshire. This was during a time known as the Long Parliament.

Later, in 1654, he was chosen again as an MP for Northamptonshire. This time, he served in a different Parliament called the First Protectorate Parliament.

His Family Life

Sir John Dryden was married three times. His first wife was Priscilla Quarles. She was the daughter of James Quarles and the sister of a famous poet named Francis Quarles.

His second wife was Anne Parvis. She was the daughter of Henry Parvis. Sir John did not have any children with his first two wives.

His third wife was Honor Bevill. She was the daughter of Sir Robert Bevill. With Honor, Sir John had several children. His oldest son, Robert, later became the 3rd Baronet after his father. Sir John Dryden was also the uncle of another very famous English poet, John Dryden.
