Sir John Gage, 1st Baronet facts for kids
Sir John Gage, 1st Baronet (who passed away on October 3, 1633) was an important English landowner and a baronet. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down in the family. Sir John Gage was also an ancestor of the Viscounts Gage, which means he was a family member who lived a long time ago, and later generations of his family received the title of Viscount.
Who Was Sir John Gage?
Sir John Gage was the son of Thomas Gage and Elizabeth Guilford. He lived in a time when England was ruled by kings and queens, and titles like baronet were given by the monarch.
Family Life
Sir John Gage married Penelope Darcy on June 28, 1611. Penelope was the daughter of Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers and Mary Kitson. Sir John and Penelope had eight children together.
Penelope owned a large estate called Hengrave Hall in a county called Suffolk. She later left this important family home to their third son, Edward. Hengrave Hall then became the main home for many of their descendants, who were known as the Rokewode-Gage baronets.
Sir John Gage also had a sister named Elizabeth. Elizabeth was the mother of a famous English nun named Dame Gertrude More.
Becoming a Baronet
Sir John Gage was given the title of baronet by King Charles I on March 26, 1622. This special title was "of Firle" in Sussex, and it was part of the Baronetage of England, which is a list of all baronets created in England.
When Sir John Gage passed away, his eldest son, Thomas, inherited his baronet title. Interestingly, his third son, Edward, was also later made a baronet, showing the family's connection to these important titles.
