Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir John Hurley was an important Irish figure who lived around the early 1700s. He was known for supporting James Francis Edward Stuart, who many people believed should be the rightful king of England, Scotland, and Ireland. These supporters were called Jacobites.

Who Was Sir John Hurley?

Sir John Hurley came from a well-known Irish family. His grandfather was Sir Maurice Hurley of Knocklong. Sir John's father, Sir William Hurley, was a Member of Parliament (an M.P.) for Kilmallock in 1689. His mother was Mary Blount.

Supporting the Pretender

In 1714, Sir John Hurley was in Dublin. He was believed to be gathering soldiers to support James Francis Edward Stuart. Stuart was often called "the Pretender" by those who did not want him to be king. Sir John managed to escape from where he was being held. We do not know much about what happened to him after his escape. He had a son, also named John. This family lived in Drumacoo, near Kinvara, in County Galway by 1840.

Working with Irish Brigades

Sir John Hurley also seems to have helped recruit people for the Irish Brigades in the early 1700s. The Irish Brigades were groups of Irish soldiers who served in armies of other countries, like France or Spain. Sometimes, historical records can confuse Sir John Hurley with his cousin, Colonel John Hurley.

Sir John Hurley was also a cousin of Luis Roberto de Lacy (1772–1817). Luis Roberto de Lacy became a brigadier general in the Spanish Army and fought for Spain in the Peninsular War.
