Who Was Sir John Langham?

Sir John Langham was born in 1584. He was the oldest son of Edward Langham from a place called Guilsborough in Northamptonshire, England. When his father passed away in 1607, John took over the family's responsibilities.

Early Life and Business Career

When he was young, John Langham became an apprentice to a man named Sir Richard Napier. Sir Richard was a "Turkey merchant," which meant he traded goods with countries in the Near East, like the Ottoman Empire (which was often called "Turkey" back then). John worked for him in that region.

After his time as an apprentice, John Langham became a successful Turkey merchant himself. He made a lot of money in the City of London. He also became a key member of two very important trading groups: the Levant Company and the East India Company. These companies were big businesses that helped England trade with distant parts of the world.

With his wealth, Sir John bought a lot of land in Northamptonshire. One important purchase was the Cottesbrooke estate in 1635.

Role in London Government

Sir John Langham was also involved in the government of London. He was an alderman, which is a senior member of the city council. In 1642, he served as the Sheriff of London.

During a time of big political changes in England, Sir John faced some challenges. He was sent to the Tower of London twice. This happened because he, along with the Lord Mayor and other aldermen, refused to announce a new law that would get rid of the king. This shows he was loyal to the king during a difficult period in English history.

Sir John Langham's Political Career

Sir John Langham continued his public service, becoming a Member of Parliament (MP) during a time when England was going through many changes.

Serving in Parliament

In 1654, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for the City of London. He served in the First Protectorate Parliament. Later, in 1660, he was elected again, this time representing Southwark in the Convention Parliament.

Becoming a Baronet

After the king was restored to power, Sir John Langham was honored for his loyalty. On May 16, 1660, he was knighted. Soon after, on June 7, 1660, he was given the title of Baronet of Cottesbrooke. This was a special reward for the difficulties he faced because he supported the king.

Family and Legacy

Sir John Langham lived a long life, passing away at the age of 87 in 1671.

He was married to Mary Bunce, who was the daughter of James Bunce. After Sir John's death, his son, James, inherited his title and became the 2nd Baronet.
