Sir John Swinton, 15th of that Ilk was an important Scottish knight. He was the son of Sir John Swinton, 14th of that Ilk, and Princess Margaret. Princess Margaret's father was Robert, Duke of Albany, who was a Regent. A Regent is someone who rules a country when the king or queen is too young or unable to rule. Sir John Swinton was also connected to Clan Swinton, a famous Scottish family.

A Brave Scottish Knight

Sir John Swinton was known as a brave and skilled fighter. He lived during a long period of conflict called the Hundred Years' War. This war was fought between England and France, and Scotland often helped France. Sir John led his family's soldiers, the Clan Swinton, in many battles.

Fighting in France

In 1421, Sir John Swinton fought in the Battle of Baugé in France. In this battle, the Scottish and French armies worked together against the English. They won a great victory. It is said that Sir John Swinton was the knight who defeated the Duke of Clarence during this battle. The Duke of Clarence was the brother of King Henry V of England.

This important moment is even mentioned in a poem by Sir John Swinton's descendant, the famous writer Sir Walter Scott. The poem is called "The Lay of the Last Minstrel". It says:

  • "And Swinton laid the lance in rest,
    That amed of yore the sparkling crest
    Of Clarence's Plantagenet"
    .

His Final Battle

Sadly, Sir John Swinton was killed a few years later. This happened in 1424, during another battle in France called the Battle of Verneuil. The Clan Swinton fought bravely, but Sir John lost his life in this fight.
