Sir John Pollard Willoughby (born April 21, 1799 – died September 15, 1866) was a British politician. He was also a civil servant, which means he worked for the government. He belonged to the Conservative Party.

Early Life and Career

John Willoughby was born at Baldon House in Oxfordshire. He went to Merchant Taylors' School from 1809 to 1812. After a short time at sea, he studied at Haileybury College from 1815 to 1818.

In 1818, John Willoughby joined the Bombay Civil Service. This was a group of British officials who worked for the government in India. He became an assistant in Baroda in 1820. In 1822, he married Eliza Kennedy. She was the daughter of Colonel Michael Kennedy, an army officer in India.

From 1828 to 1835, he worked as a political agent in Kathiawar. This meant he helped manage relations between the British and local rulers. After that, he became the Chief Secretary to the Government of Bombay until 1846. He then served on the Bombay Legislative Council until 1851. This council helped make laws for the region.

Life in England

After his work in India, John Willoughby returned to England. His first wife, Eliza, passed away in 1852. In 1854, he married Elizabeth Hawkes. She was the daughter of Thomas Hawkes, who was also a Member of Parliament.

In the same year, he joined the Court of Directors. This group helped manage the British East India Company. He stayed in this role until 1858. John Willoughby had at least three daughters: Maria Martha, Maria Gertrude, and Mary Sophia.

Member of Parliament

In 1857, John Willoughby was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Leominster. An MP is someone who represents a specific area and helps make laws for the country. He was a Conservative MP.

He held this position until 1858. He then resigned because he was appointed to the Council of India. This council advised the British government on how to rule India.

Becoming a Baronet

On March 23, 1865, John Willoughby became the 4th Baronet of Baldon House. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family. He received this title after his brother, Henry Willoughby, passed away. However, John Willoughby himself died the very next year, in 1866. The Baronet title then went to his relative, John Christopher Willoughby.
