Joshua Francis Rowley was an important person in England. He was a soldier, a landowner, and he served his community in many ways. From 1978 to 1994, he held a special position called the Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. He was born on December 31, 1920, and passed away on February 21, 1997.

Early Life and Family

Joshua Rowley was the son of Sir Charles Rowley, who held a special title called a Baronet. Joshua went to two famous schools in England: Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.

From 1940 to 1946, he served as a soldier in a famous army group called the Grenadier Guards.

In 1959, he married Celia Ella Vere Monckton. She was the daughter of the 8th Viscount Galway. Joshua and Celia had one daughter, Susan Emily, and two grandchildren. Lady Rowley, his wife, also served her community as a magistrate and worked for Princess Alexandra of Kent.

On January 19, 1962, Joshua inherited the title of Baronet from his father, becoming Sir Joshua Rowley.

He passed away in 1997 and is buried in the churchyard of St Mary in Stoke-by-Nayland, Suffolk.

Serving the Community

Joshua Rowley spent many years working for important organizations and local government.

Working with the National Trust

From 1950 to 1955, he worked for the National Trust as a Deputy Secretary. The National Trust is a charity that helps protect important historical places and natural areas in England.

Leading Local Councils

He was the Chairman of the West Suffolk County Council from 1971 to 1974. After that, he became the Chairman of the larger Suffolk County Council from 1976 to 1978. These councils help manage local services and make decisions for the people living in those areas.

Special Roles in Suffolk

Before becoming the Lord Lieutenant, he held other important roles in Suffolk. He was a Deputy Lieutenant, then the High Sheriff, and later the Vice Lord-Lieutenant. The Lord Lieutenant is the King's personal representative in a county, a very important and respected position.

In 1978, he became a Magistrate, also known as a JP (Justice of the Peace). Magistrates are volunteers who help make decisions in local courts. In 1991, the University of East Anglia gave him an Honorary DCL, which is a special award recognizing his contributions.
