Sir Nathaniel Curzon, 4th Baronet (born 1676, died 1758) was an important English politician from the 18th century. He belonged to the Tory Party, which was one of the main political groups in Britain at the time. Sir Nathaniel represented different areas in Parliament, helping to make laws for the country. He lived at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, a large and famous family home.

Who Was Sir Nathaniel Curzon?

Nathaniel Curzon was born into a well-known family. His father was also named Sir Nathaniel Curzon, who was the 2nd Baronet of Kedleston. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that is passed down through families. His mother was Sarah Penn.

His Political Journey

Sir Nathaniel Curzon had a long career in politics. He was a Member of Parliament (MP), which means he was elected by people to represent them in the British Parliament.

Early Elections

  • In 1713, he was first elected as an MP for the area of Derby.
  • He lost this seat in 1715, meaning he was not re-elected.
  • However, he tried again and was elected for Clitheroe in 1722.

Inheriting the Family Title

In 1727, something big happened in his family. His older brother, Sir John Curzon, who was the 3rd Baronet, passed away. Because his brother did not have children, Nathaniel inherited the title of Baronet, becoming the 4th Baronet. He also inherited Kedleston Hall, the family's grand estate.

Representing Derbyshire

Later in 1727, there was a general election across Britain. Sir Nathaniel Curzon was elected to represent Derbyshire in Parliament. This was the same area his brother had represented. He held this important position for many years, until 1754.

Family Life and Legacy

Sir Nathaniel Curzon married Mary Assheton. She was the daughter of Sir Ralph Assheton, who was also a Baronet from Lancashire.

When Sir Nathaniel Curzon passed away in 1758, his family continued to be important figures in British society:

  • His oldest son, Nathaniel Curzon, inherited the Baronet title. He later received an even higher title, becoming the 1st Baron Scarsdale in 1761.
  • His second son, Assheton Curzon, also gained a noble title. He became the 1st Baron Curzon in 1794 and then the 1st Viscount Curzon in 1802.

This shows how the Curzon family played a significant role in British politics and society for many generations.
