Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Baronet (born December 9, 1649 – died April 20, 1701) was an English politician and a special kind of noble called a baronet. He was also a member of the Royal Society, which is a famous group of scientists.
Early Life and Education
Orlando Bridgeman was the second son of another important person, also named Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Baronet, of Great Lever. His mother was Dorothy Saunders.
He went to Westminster College starting in 1662. After two years, he continued his studies at Magdalene College, Cambridge, a well-known university. In 1669, he became a lawyer, training at a place called the Inner Temple.
Political Journey
Orlando Bridgeman began his political career in 1669. He won a special election to join the English House of Commons, which is like a parliament where laws are made. He represented the area of Horsham. He served in this role for ten years, until 1679.
In 1673, King Charles II gave him the title of baronet. This meant he became Sir Orlando Bridgeman, 1st Baronet, of Ridley, in the county of Chester.
He also held other important jobs. From 1673 to 1680, he was a Commissioner for Assessment in Warwickshire, helping to collect taxes. He did a similar job in Coventry for two years. In 1675, he was a Commissioner for Recusants in Sussex. This role involved dealing with people who did not follow the official church. In 1696, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society, which shows he was respected for his knowledge.
Family Life
Sir Orlando Bridgeman married Mary Cave on September 28, 1670, when he was twenty years old. Mary was the daughter of Sir Thomas Cave, 1st Baronet. They had two daughters and one son.
Sir Orlando passed away in 1701. His wife, Mary, died just a few weeks later, on June 8. Both were buried at the Parish Church of St. Michael in Coventry. A special plaque was put up there to honor Mary. Sadly, this church was later destroyed during World War II.
His son, also named Orlando, took over his baronet title. His older daughter, Charlotte, married Richard Symes in 1703. His younger daughter, Penelope, married Thomas Newport, 1st Baron Torrington, who was also from an important family.
