Sir Paulet St John (born April 7, 1704 – died June 8, 1780) was an important British politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is a key part of the British government, for many years between 1734 and 1754. He was also the 1st Baronet of his family.

His Early Life and Home

Paulet St John was born in 1704. He was the oldest son of Ellis St John. His mother, Martha, inherited land and property in Dogmersfield Park, Dogmersfield, Hampshire. Paulet went to Oriel College, Oxford in 1722 to study. When his father passed away in 1729, Paulet inherited his family's estates. He also finished building the new house at Dogmersfield, which his father had started.

His Public Roles

Sir Paulet St John held several important jobs during his life. In 1727, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Hampshire. This was a very old and respected role, like being a chief officer for the county. Later, in 1764, he became the woodward of the New Forest. This meant he was in charge of managing the forests and woodlands there. He was also elected Mayor of Winchester for 1772–73, which is the head of the city government. In 1772, he was given the special title of Baronet. This is a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in the family.

Time in Parliament

Sir Paulet St John was a Member of Parliament (MP) for several years. An MP is someone elected to represent a specific area in the House of Commons. He first represented Winchester from 1734 to 1741. After that, he represented Hampshire from 1741 to 1747. He returned to represent Winchester again from 1751 to 1754. He passed away in 1780.

His Family Life

Sir Paulet St John was married three times. His first wife was Elizabeth, the daughter of Sir James Rushout, 2nd Baronet. His second wife was Mary, who was the daughter of John Waters. With Mary, he had three sons. His third wife was Jane, the daughter of R. Harris. When Sir Paulet St John died, his son Henry inherited his Baronet title.
