Sir Richard Gethin: A Life in Politics
Starting His Political Journey
Richard Gethin began his political career as a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in a country's parliament. From 1639 to 1649, he represented the town of Clonmel in the Irish House of Commons. The House of Commons was a part of the Irish Parliament where laws were discussed and made.
New Beginnings and Land Grants
After a period known as the Stuart Restoration, which brought the king back to power, Sir Richard Gethin received a special gift. He was given land in a place called Fermoy in County Cork, Ireland. This gift came with an important condition: he had to start an English settlement there. He named his new land "Gethinsgrott."
Serving in Parliament Again
Sir Richard Gethin continued his work in politics. Between 1661 and 1666, he served as an MP again. This time, he represented the area of Newtown Limavady in the Irish House of Commons.
Becoming a Baronet
On August 1, 1665, King Charles II of England gave Richard Gethin a special honor. He was made a baronet. A baronet is a person who holds a hereditary title, meaning it can be passed down in their family. This title was "of Gethinsgrott" and was part of the Baronetage of Ireland.
Joining the Privy Council
In 1675, Sir Richard Gethin received another important role. He became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. The Privy Council was a group of trusted advisors to the King or Queen, helping them make important decisions for the country.
His Successor
When Sir Richard Gethin passed away in 1679, his title was passed on to his grandson, who was also named Richard.
