Early Life and Public Service
Sir Robert Anstruther was the son of Sir Ralph Anstruther, the 4th Baronet. His mother was Mary Jane Torrens. He went to a famous school called Harrow School. After school, he joined the Grenadier Guards, which is a part of the British Army. He became a high-ranking officer, reaching the rank of lieutenant-colonel.
In 1863, when his father passed away, Robert became the 5th Baronet. This meant he inherited the special title. He also held important local roles. From 1864 to 1886, he was the Lord Lieutenant of Fife. This is a representative of the King or Queen in a county. He was also a Deputy Lieutenant and a J.P. for Caithness. A Justice of the Peace helps keep law and order in the local community.

Sir Robert Anstruther was a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. He represented the area of Fife from 1864 to 1880. Later, he represented St Andrews Burghs from 1885 to 1886.

Sir Robert Anstruther married Louisa Maria Chowne Marshall. They got married on July 29, 1857, in Beckenham, Kent. They had several children. Their son, Sir Ralph Anstruther, later became the 6th Baronet. Another son, Henry Torrens Anstruther, also became a politician and was elected to the same area his father represented. His youngest son was Admiral Robert Anstruther.
