Henry Torrens Anstruther (born November 27, 1860 – died April 5, 1926) was a Scottish politician. He belonged to the Liberal Unionist party. This party believed in keeping the union between Great Britain and Ireland.

Early Life and Education

Henry Torrens Anstruther was born in 1860. He was the second son of Sir Robert Anstruther, 5th Baronet, who was also a Member of Parliament. A Baronet is a special title, similar to a knight.

Henry went to school at Eton College, a famous school in England. After that, he studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland.

A Career in Politics

In 1884, Henry became an advocate in Edinburgh. An advocate is a type of lawyer who speaks for people in court.

He then followed in his father's footsteps and became a politician. From 1886 to 1903, he was a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the country's parliament. Henry represented the area called St Andrews Burghs.

Government Role

From 1895 to 1903, Henry Anstruther worked in the government. He was a Lord of the Treasury. This role involved helping to manage the country's money and finances.

Other Important Roles

Henry also held other important positions. He was a Justice of the Peace for two areas, Buckinghamshire and Fife. A Justice of the Peace is a volunteer who helps with local legal matters.

From 1903, he became a member of the Administrative Council of the Suez Canal Company. The Suez Canal is a very important waterway that connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.

Later, from 1905 to 1910, he was an Alderman on the London County Council. This council helped to run the city of London.

Family Life

Henry Torrens Anstruther was married to the writer Eva Anstruther. They had a daughter named Joyce Anstruther. Joyce later became a well-known writer herself, using the pen-name Jan Struther.
