Early Life and Family

Robert Fitzwygram was the oldest son of Lady Eleanor and Sir Robert Wigram, 1st Baronet. His father was a successful merchant and shipbuilder. A merchant buys and sells goods, and a shipbuilder constructs ships. Robert had many brothers. Some of his brothers were also well-known. For example, Joseph Cotton Wigram became a bishop. His brother Octavius Wigram was important in the City of London. He worked for Lloyd's of London and was a Governor of the Royal Exchange Assurance Company.

Career and Public Service

Robert Fitzwygram worked with his father in the shipping business. They owned several ships that hunted whales in the South Sea. This was part of the Southern whale fishery. Political Journey

In 1806, Robert followed his father into Parliament. He became a Member of Parliament for Fowey. He was a Director of the Bank of England. This meant he helped manage the country's money. He was also made a knight on May 7, 1818. This gave him the title "Sir."

In 1829, he was elected to represent Wexford Borough. However, his election was challenged. He lost his seat after a special review. He was elected again in 1830. But he lost his seat once more in 1831 after another challenge. When his father passed away in 1830, Robert inherited the title of Baronet. This is a special hereditary title. In 1832, he officially changed his last name to FitzWygram.
