Sir John Hayes, 1st Baronet facts for kids
Sir John Macnamara Hayes (born around 1750, died 1809) was an important doctor in the army. He was even a special doctor for Prince George, who later became King George IV of the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Education
John Hayes was born in Limerick, Ireland, around 1750. His father was John Hayes, and his mother was Margaret Macnamara Hayes. His grandfather, Daniel Hayes, was a captain in the army. He fought in a big battle called the Battle of the Boyne.
John Hayes studied medicine and became a doctor. He earned his medical degree in Rheims in 1784. Later, he joined the College of Physicians in 1786. This meant he was officially allowed to practice medicine.
Medical Career
John Hayes worked as a surgeon for the British Army. He served in the United States from 1775 to 1783. In the 1790s, he also worked with the army during the French Revolutionary Wars.
In 1784, Prince George chose him as his special doctor. Prince George later became King George IV. Sir John also worked at the Westminster Hospital from 1792 to 1794.
Because of his excellent medical service, he received a special honor in 1797. He was made a baronet, which is a title like "Sir." In 1806, Sir John became the inspector-general of the army's medical department at Woolwich. He held this important job until he passed away in 1809.
Family Life
On May 1, 1787, Sir John married Anne White. Anne was the oldest daughter of Henry White, a rich merchant from New York City. Anne's mother was Eve Van Cortlandt. Anne had several brothers and sisters.
Sir John and Anne had four children:
- Sir Thomas Pelham Hayes, 2nd Baronet (1794–1851). He married Caroline Emma Dickson in 1840.
- Sir John Warren Hayes, 3rd Baronet (1799–1896). He married Ellen Beauchamp in 1844.
- Anna-Maria Hayes. She married Reverend Thomas Robertson in 1824. He was a senior chaplain in Calcutta.
- Selina Hayes. She married Sir Robert Fitzwygram, 2nd Baronet.
Sir John died in Camden on July 19, 1809. He was buried at St. James's, Piccadilly. His oldest son, Thomas, became the next baronet. After Thomas died in 1851, his brother John became the baronet. When John died in 1896, the title of baronet ended.
