Sir Robert Hildyard, 2nd Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Robert Hildyard, 2nd Baronet (born 1671 – died November 30, 1729) was an important English landowner and a Member of Parliament. He lived in places like Patrington and Winestead in the area known as the East Riding of Yorkshire.

Sir Robert was a significant figure in his time. He inherited his title and lands, and he also played a part in the government of England.

Who Was Sir Robert Hildyard?

Sir Robert Hildyard was the oldest son of Christopher Hildyard. He became the 2nd Baronet after his grandfather, Sir Robert Hildyard, 1st Baronet, passed away on March 7, 1685. A Baronet is a special title, like a knight, but it can be passed down through the family.

A Member of Parliament

Sir Robert Hildyard was also a Member of Parliament (often called an MP). This means he was chosen to represent a town or area in the English Parliament. Parliament is like a big meeting where people discuss and make laws for the country. Sir Robert represented the town of Hedon from December 1701 to July 1702.

Building Winestead Hall

One of Sir Robert's notable achievements was overseeing the building of Winestead Hall. This was a large and important house in the area, showing his status as a major landowner.

Military Role

Sir Robert also had a military role. He was a Lieutenant-Colonel in charge of the East Riding Regiment of Militia. The Militia was a group of ordinary citizens who were trained to act as soldiers in times of need, helping to protect their local area. He held this position during the Jacobite rising of 1715. This was a time when some people tried to bring back the old royal family to the throne of Great Britain.

Family and Legacy

Sir Robert Hildyard never married. When he died in 1729, his title as Baronet passed to his nephew, who became Sir Robert Hildyard, 3rd Baronet.
