Sir Roger Burgoyne, 2nd Baronet (born 1618 – died 16 September 1677) was an important English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of the government, at different times between 1641 and 1656.
Early Life and Education
Roger Burgoyne was born in 1618. His father was Sir John Burgoyne, 1st Baronet, who lived in Sutton, Bedfordshire, and Wroxall, Warwickshire. His mother was Jane Kempe. He was baptized in Wroxall in March 1618.
Roger went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, a famous university, in 1634. Later, in 1637, he also studied law at Lincoln's Inn in London.
A Career in Politics
In 1641, Roger Burgoyne became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Bedfordshire. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. He was chosen during a time known as the Long Parliament.
He was given the title of Knight on July 18, 1641. He continued to serve in Parliament until 1648. Later, in 1656, he was elected as an MP again, this time for Warwickshire. He served in the Second Protectorate Parliament.
Family and Later Life
When his father passed away in 1657, Roger Burgoyne became the 2nd Baronet. A Baronet is a special title that is passed down in families.
In 1661, he also held the important local position of High Sheriff of Bedfordshire. A High Sheriff was responsible for law and order in the county.
Sir Roger Burgoyne was married twice. First, he married Anne Snelling, and they had several children. Later, he married Anne Robinson, and they also had children. His son, John, took over the Baronetcy after him.
Sir Roger Burgoyne died on September 16, 1677, when he was about 59 years old. He was buried in the church at Sutton.
