Sir John Burgoyne, 1st Baronet (born around 1592–1657) was an English politician. He served in the House of Commons, which is like a part of today's Parliament, from 1645 to 1648. He was a supporter of the Parliamentarian side during the English Civil War.

Sir John Burgoyne was an important figure during a very turbulent time in English history. He was known for supporting the Parliament against the King during the English Civil War.

Early Life and Family

John Burgoyne was born around 1592. His parents were Roger Burgoyne and Margaret Wendy. He was baptized in a place called Haslingfield on January 29, 1592.

He went to Emmanuel College, Cambridge in 1607. Later, in 1611, he studied law at the Middle Temple in London. His father, Roger, bought an estate called Honily in 1625 and built a large house there. When his father passed away in 1636, John inherited these family estates.

In 1640, John Burgoyne became the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire. This was an important local role, like a chief law enforcement officer for the county. On July 15, 1641, he was given the special title of a baronet of Sutton. This title meant he was a knight, and it could be passed down to his children.

His Role in Parliament

In 1645, Sir John Burgoyne was chosen to be a Member of Parliament for Warwickshire. He served in what was known as the Long Parliament.

The Long Parliament was a very important Parliament that met for a long time, from 1640 to 1660. It was a time of great disagreement between the King and Parliament. Sir John Burgoyne supported the Parliamentarian side, also known as the Roundheads. They believed Parliament should have more power than the King.

He remained a Member of Parliament until 1648. At that time, he was removed from Parliament during an event called Pride's Purge. This was when soldiers, led by Colonel Thomas Pride, stopped members who supported the King from entering Parliament.

Family Life

Sir John Burgoyne married Jane Kempe. She was the daughter of Julius Kempe. Together, they had four daughters and three sons. His son, Roger, inherited his father's baronet title after Sir John passed away.

Sir John Burgoyne died at the age of 65 in 1657.
