Sir Thomas Maule was an important Scottish nobleman from a long time ago. He held the title of 2nd Baron of Panmure and Benvie. This meant he was a lord who owned land and had a special place in society.

Life of Sir Thomas Maule

Sir Thomas Maule was the oldest son of Sir William Maule and Marion Fleming. His father was also a Baron, just like him. When his father passed away before the year 1407, Thomas took over his father's title and lands. This was a common way for titles and property to be passed down in noble families.

The Battle of Harlaw

Sir Thomas Maule's life ended on July 24, 1411. He was killed during a very important event in Scottish history called the Battle of Harlaw. This battle took place near a town called Inverurie. Sir Thomas was fighting alongside Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar, a powerful Scottish leader. The Battle of Harlaw was a major conflict in Scotland, and many brave knights and soldiers fought there.

A Mention in History

Sir Thomas Maule is remembered in an old Scottish song, or "ballad," called The Battle of Harlaw. These ballads were like popular songs or poems that told stories of important events and heroes. The song mentions several knights who fought bravely and lost their lives. Here is a part of the ballad that speaks of him:

And thair the knicht of Lawriston
Was slain into his armour schene,
And gude Sir Robert Davidson,
Wha provost was of Aberdene:
The knicht of Panmure, as was sene,
A mortall man in armour bricht,
Sir Thomas Murray, stout and kene,
Left to the warld thair last gude nicht.

His Family and Legacy

Even though Sir Thomas Maule died in battle, his family line continued. He had one son, also named Thomas Maule. This son inherited his father's title and became the next Baron of Panmure and Benvie. This shows how important family names and titles were in those times.
