Thomas Maule (born around 1411, died 1450) was an important person in Scottish history. He held the title of the 3rd Baron of Panmure and Benvie. A baron was a noble who owned a lot of land and had special rights. Thomas Maule became a baron when he was very young.
Becoming a Baron
Thomas Maule was the oldest son of Sir Thomas Maule. His father was also a Baron of Panmure and Benvie. Sadly, his father died in 1411 at a battle called the Battle of Harlaw.
Because Thomas was still a child when his father died, he could not manage his own affairs. His grandfather, Sir Andrew Gray of Fowlis, took care of things for him. This continued until Thomas was old enough to manage his own lands and titles.
A Claim to Land
In 1437, something big happened in Scotland. King James I of Scotland was murdered. After this, Thomas Maule made a claim for a piece of land called the barony of Brechin-Barclay.
This land had been owned by Walter Stewart, who was involved in the king's murder. Walter Stewart's wife, Margaret Barclay, was the rightful owner of the land. But she had died, and so had her heir.
The land was supposed to go to Margaret Barclay's aunt, Jane Barclay, and her family. Thomas Maule was Jane Barclay's great-grandson. This meant he had the strongest claim to the land. However, he was only able to get a small part of it. Most of the land was taken by the king.
Family Life
Thomas Maule was married to a woman named Mary Abercrombie. She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Abercrombie.
Thomas and Mary had a son, who was also named Thomas Maule. This son later became the 4th Baron of Panmure and Benvie. He was born around 1430 in a place called Forfar in Angus, Scotland. He passed away on January 16, 1498.
